The Supreme Court of India has directed the Rajasthan Government to progressively introduce the Rajasthani language in schools, emphasizing the importance of mother-tongue education under the Constitution and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. In Padam Mehta & Anr. v. State of Rajasthan, the Court observed that regional language education is essential for preserving linguistic identity, cultural heritage, and improving foundational learning among children. The Supreme Court held that states cannot remain passive when constitutional and educational policies strongly support teaching in local and regional languages. The bench noted that Rajasthani is spoken by over 4.36 crore people and is already taught in universities, proving its academic and institutional recognition. While acknowledging that education policy falls within the executive domain, the Court clarified that judicial intervention is justified where constitutional rights and language rights are ignored due to prolonged government inaction. The Court directed phased implementation of Rajasthani language education in both government and private schools across Rajasthan. The judgment strengthens the constitutional vision of mother-tongue education, regional language preservation, and educational rights in India.
