Karnataka withdraws hijab ban; religious symbols allowed with uniforms

The Karnataka Government has officially withdrawn the controversial 2022 Hijab Ban Order and permitted students to wear limited religious symbols such as hijab, turban, rudraksha, sacred thread, and other traditional symbols along with prescribed school uniforms. The decision marks a significant development in the ongoing debate surrounding religious freedom, school uniform rules, and constitutional rights in India. The new order emphasizes that educational institutions cannot deny admission, examinations, or participation in academic activities merely because a student wears permitted religious attire or symbols. At the same time, the government clarified that institutional discipline, safety, and student identification must still be maintained. The move comes amid the pending Supreme Court of India proceedings in the Karnataka Hijab Case, where questions relating to Article 25, freedom of religion, secularism, equality, and right to education remain under consideration. The Karnataka Government also stressed that Indian secularism means equal respect for all religions rather than exclusion of religious identity from public institutions. The order reinforces principles of non-discrimination, dignity, educational access, and reasonable accommodation in schools.
