On 26 July 2008, 21 coordinated bomb blasts struck Ahmedabad within 70 minutes, killing 56 and injuring 200+, with terrorists notably targeting hospitals treating earlier victims — carried out by Indian Mujahideen, linked to SIMI, as alleged revenge for the 2002 post-Godhra riots. A 2022 Special Court convicted 49 persons, sentencing 38 to death, India's highest-ever count in one case. On 7 July 2026, the Gujarat High Court (Justices Kogje and Dave) confirmed all 38 death sentences and 11 life terms, dismissing all appeals, holding the attack met the "rarest of rare" threshold given its scale and hospital targeting. The State was ordered to pay ₹10 lakh to each deceased's kin and ₹5 lakh for grievous injuries, by 30 March 2027.
